Hi everyone,

SO I’ve been helping to get this event together to raise funds for a really awesome group. Surfing Tribe supports kids in Peru who have been rescued off the streets and given a home, education and a chance for a better future. Kique, the founder, really walks the walk. Having grown up in Peru, he’s been involved with this work for at least 20 years.

If you are in SF this Saturday, please consider coming along to the beautiful Bay Club so support this event. Come by yourself of register a group! Classes run all day and you can register at the above number or email. This is also a great opportunity to try out a new craze in surfing, The Surfset program, as featured on Shark Tank and a variety of other places!

I don’t mean to impose a personal favour on you guys, but I really would like to ask that everyone who follows me reblog this.

I don’t think I made it very clear but last month I was sexually assaulted by someone who I thought was my friend (I don’t want to talk about it don’t ask), and it’s… really fucked with my head.

Had I known this a month ago I would have been able to get away.

I’ve been thinking about this quote since I saw it on my dash this morning. I guess it’s a lesson I’ve been trying to implement both in and out of work recently. My job, which requires me to sell stuff to people is very much all about the pitch. I hate pitching and I’m really not good at it. So I just try to talk to people and try to hear a little of there story and connect on some kind of level. I really don’t care if they walk out with a purchase or not. I like some of the products we sell, and have bought many of them myself, but I’m quite fine if people don’t find anything that meets their needs.

Funny thing is though, I’m currently the best performing employee at our store across all of the areas my boss finds it necessary to measure and have been for over 2 months now. And I really think it’s in large part due to that fact that I am WAY more interested in viewing the people that come into our store as people, not wallets. It shouldn’t really be a revelation, but I think too many retail businesses think that the focus has to be on perfecting the pitch, when really, people crave (and respond much more favourably) to genuineness.

She had pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookies—little powdered
Sugar crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nuts—out of her bag—
And was offering them to all the women at the gate.

To my amazement, not a single woman declined one. It was like a
Sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the traveler from California,
The lovely woman from Laredo—we were all covered with the same
Powdered sugar. And smiling. There are no better cookies.

And then the airline broke out the free beverages from huge coolers—
Non-alcoholic—and the two little girls for our flight, one African
American, one Mexican American—ran around serving us all apple juice
And lemonade and they were covered with powdered sugar too.

And I noticed my new best friend—by now we were holding hands—
Had a potted plant poking out of her bag, some medicinal thing,

With green furry leaves. Such an old country traveling tradition. Always
Carry a plant. Always stay rooted to somewhere.

And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and thought,
This is the world I want to live in. The shared world.

Not a single person in this gate—once the crying of confusion stopped
—has seemed apprehensive about any other person.

They took the cookies. I wanted to hug all those other women too.
This can still happen anywhere.
